Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine. It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. I've been on Plaquenil for a little over a year and it definitely does drop my blood sugar. It's actually in the medicine's literature that it can do this. I'm not diabetic and I normally run low normal blood sugar. However, on this medication, I have episodes of hypoglycemia. One of the sjoggies there who is diabetic noted that her blood sugars were consistently lower after she began taking Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine. Hydroxychloriquine is a disease modifying anti rheumatic drug DMARD commonly used as a first-line medication in the treatment of Sjogren's syndrome and other autoimmune diseases.

For example, it may be combined with an antibiotic to treat chronic Q-fever, which humans usually catch from farm animals or raw milk. Plaquenil is used to treat other types of infections too.

  7. Yes, plaquenil can cause low blood sugars. Eat frequent meals with carbs and protein but good carbs with fiber like oatmeal or whole wheat toast with peanut butter. I like the lowered blood sugar effect b/c I have type 2 diabetes but before I got type 2, I had some low sugars with plaquenil for sure.
