    Plaquenil for limited scleroderma

DMARDs include immunosuppressants, antimalarial drugs, anti-inflammatory metals, and biologic agents. , Medical Overview, and Medications for Scleroderma, Arthritis, Autoimmune and Rheumatic Diseases) Immunosuppressants fall under a category of drugs referred to as DMARDs (Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs). Despite longer disease duration, b DMARD-treated Ps A patients benefit from higher bone mass and better bone strength than Ps A patients receiving methotrexate or no DMARDs. (Also see Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis) Ability of disease–modifying antirheumatic drugs to prevent or delay rheumatoid arthritis (RA) onset: a systematic literature review and meta–analysis (MA). This MA demonstrates that early therapeutic intervention may significantly reduce the risk of RA onset in this very first phase of the disease. (Also see Treatments for Rheumatoid Arthritis) Optimizing conventional DMARD (c DMARD) therapy for Sjögren's syndrome (p SS).

The duration of therapy and the dose of medication are dictated by the specific situation. Some patients will need chronic administration and others will recover after a limited course of therapy. The other type of inflammation relates to the skin and other tissue injury caused by the scleroderma process. Lupus and scleroderma can “cross-over” or have overlapping symptoms and signs. For example, Raynaud’s or esophageal dysfunction is found in 90% with scleroderma but 30% with lupus, swollen joints in half with lupus and 30% with scleroderma, and positive ANA in 98% with lupus and 80% with scleroderma. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria.

Science Direct, Autoimmun Rev, 2018 May;17(5):480-492. (Also see Treatments for Symptoms of Sjögren’s Syndrome) The risk of malignancy and its incidence in early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients treated with biologic DMARDs. The unique and potent mechanisms of action to target immunopathology in p SS suggests that optimizing c DMARDs for treatment of p SS is worthwhile.

Jan 31, 2020 Call your doctor if you think that you are experiencing episodes of Raynaud's phenomenon or other symptoms of scleroderma, especially if you are a woman of childbearing age. Prognosis. While many people with scleroderma live long, full lives, the death rate is increased by up to eight times for diffuse disease and two times for limited disease. Overview. Limited scleroderma, also known as CREST syndrome, is one subtype of scleroderma — a condition whose name means "hardened skin." The skin changes associated with limited scleroderma typically occur only in the lower arms and legs, below the elbows and knees, and sometimes affect the face and neck. I may be wrong I often am! but I think there are more listed side effects for aspirin than there are for plaquenil; and by a very long shot, it would seem to be safer than steroids, especially for scleroderma patients. Basically, plaquenil's effect is to modulate the immune system, which is something that could be quite beneficial for some of us.
