We are actively investigating and prosecuting cases involving Valsartan cancers. The Propecia injury lawsuit attorneys at the Drug Law Center are accepting cases from patients who suffered injuries caused by the medication used to treat male pattern baldness. Propecia was first developed by Merck and Company in 1992 under the marketed name Proscar to treat BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) when taken at a prescribed dose of five milligrams. By 1997, the drug manufacturer remarketed the drug at a one-milligram dose and sold the synthetic compound under the name Propecia after an unexpected side effect of rejuvenating hair loss involving male pattern baldness was discovered. Within the first year after its relaunch in the United States at a lower dosage, doctors had written prescriptions for more than 400,000 men to take the medication every day. While Merck had known that uses of the medication sold as Proscar at a higher dosage caused severe sexual side effects, early labels on Propecia packaging failed to uncover problems with sexual function that had been found in clinical trials. Early trials revealed that many of the serious side effects of sexual dysfunction, ejaculation disorder, and decreased libido persisted for weeks, months or years after the patient stopped taking the medication. Propecia was heralded as a major breakthrough for the 50 million men suffering from male pattern baldness when it hit the market in 1997. But with its popularity has come mounting concerns about its serious side effects, and not only while patients take it, but for months or even years after they stop. As studies link Propecia use to impotence, depression and even suicide, users are suing the drug maker. Unlike its topical predecessor minoxidil (Rogaine), which required two messy applications daily and could take hours to dry, Propecia could be discretely swallowed with the promise of both slowing hair loss and thickening new growth. “It was the first and is still the only -approved pill to treat pattern hair loss,” says dermatologist Shani Francis, MD, director of the Hair Disorders Center for Excellence at University of Chicago. “Men could just pop a pill once a day and it worked. It was a huge deal.”18 years later, the pink octagonal pill remains a popular tool in dermatologists’ arsenal, with balding men (and some women) spending more than a quarter-billion dollars annually on Propecia and millions more on generic varieties of the active ingredient finasteride. In a study just published in Northwestern University researchers concluded that all 34 published clinical trials evaluating finasteride’s safety were inadequate and provided insufficient information about the drug’s sexual side effects. In online support forums such as Propeciahelp.com, men complain of impotence, bent or shrunken penises, reduced or discolored semen and enlarged breasts. Many of the sexual problems associated with Propecia might be permanent. Even though the drug maker has changed their Propecia warning. That's the question prompted by a new study investigating the sexual side effects of the drug finasteride (better known among the hair loss crowd as Propecia). Conducted by scientists at Northwestern University, it argues that finasteride, along with enlarged prostate-treatment drug dutasteride, causes long-term sexual dysfunction, persisting even after users have stopped taking the drug. Finasteride works by blocking production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a potent form of testosterone that contributes to male baldness. Prior to its FDA approval for use in hair loss, the drug was, and continues to be, a treatment for enlarged prostate. As with all drugs, Propecia, which is targeted at the hair loss market, has its side effects, which include decreased libido and erectile dysfunction. These symptoms were reported during the clinical trials, though the reports also noted that these eventually went away after the men stopped taking the drugs. Warnings were included on drug labels when it was first released in 1997, but following various lawsuits (at present 1,370 and counting) and complaints, in 2012, the FDA updated them to highlight that the sexual side effects might persist for at least three months after stopping treatment. You might want to think twice before asking your doctor for a prescription to stop your hair loss. That’s because certain baldness drugs might lead to erectile dysfunction, a new study out of Northwestern University suggests. After analyzing medical data from 11,909 men who took finasteride (the generic term for hair-loss drug Propecia) and dutasteride (the generic term for Avodart, which treats enlarged prostates), the researchers discovered that those with the longest exposure to the drugs were more likely to develop ED than those on them for shorter times. And the effect was most pronounced in younger guys. Men under 42 who took either of the drugs for more than 205 days had nearly 5 times the risk of developing persistent ED than those who took them for less time. All in all, 1.4 percent of men who too the finaseride or dutasteride developed persistent ED, which continued, on average, for more than three and a half years—or 1,348 days—after stopping the drugs. The duration of use was a more accurate predictor of ED than other known risk factors, like older age, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, and obesity.
