Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia.

Plaquenil is a DMARD which has been prescribed for years to treat rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and other autoimmune diseases. When the first biologic DMARD received FDA-approval in 1998, and as other biologics followed in subsequent years, it appeared as though Plaquenil would become less prescribed. For patients with moderate to severe hand pain and radiographic osteoarthritis, hydroxychloroquine was found to be no more effective than placebo for relieving pain. EULAR Recommendations Absent specific treatment recommendations for erosive hand OA, Dr. Ramonda directed rheumatologists to the 2018 update of the European League Against Rheumatism EULAR recommendations for the management of hand OA. Overall, the recommendations emphasize the importance of controlling symptoms and reducing pain. Patients should be educated and trained in ergonomic.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

Chloroquine has long been used in the treatment or prevention of malaria from Plasmodium vivax, P. malariae, excluding the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum, for it started to develop widespread resistance to it. Hair Loss - General - Sjogren's Syndrome Support Sep 05, 2016 I saw my rheumatologist yesterday, and he said the hair loss could be from taking Plaquenil. But he said it could be from getting older. Well, the hair loss started happening about six months after I began taking the Plaquenil and over a few months I lost 40% of my hair. So it is my opinion that the hair loss cause wasn't old age but the Plaquenil.
