Treatments for breast cancer can increase the risk of bone thinning (called osteoporosis) or cause joint problems. This is because some treatments reduce the level of oestrogen, which helps keep bones strong. For example, chemotherapy can cause an early menopause, which reduces oestrogen. Some hormonal therapies cause a temporary or permanent menopause. Joint stiffness and pain are common side effects of aromatase inhibitor drugs (AIs). They reduce the risk of breast cancer coming back so it’s very important to keep taking them. Your doctor can prescribe drugs to control joint pain or change you to a different AI if you have difficult side effects. You will have a scan to check your bones before and sometimes during treatment with an AI. Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them: Other side effects not listed may also occur in some patients. If you notice any other effects, check with your healthcare professional. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

I googled side effects of Tamoxifen today as been having terrible stiffness/aches all over, queasiness, kind of like bad flu symptoms. I've only been on Tamoxifen for 2 weeks after having surgery on 16 May to remove a lump and 2 lymph nodes (which were clear). I'm amazed reading that so many people are complaining of the same symptoms. I'm seeing my oncologist on Tuesday so have noted down questions to ask her as I'll probably forget when I get in there! Shoulders and neck pain like Sarfan, feeling tearful like Chriss. I was prescribed Tamoxifen rather than Letrozole because I take Alendronic Acid once a week for osteoporosis. and right down the answers as you get home and those answers are lost .. I must say though that the osteoporosis is manageable and I've been able to get on with things, going long walks etc. I think for arthritis, tamoxifen is the lesser of two evils ... But there's always someone who can relate to what your going through ... if you don't understand anything tell them to explain in a way we can understand ... After a 45 minute walk in the park the other day I was stuffed! you've heard what I said about the emotional side ... and like you my bones are very weak with lots of problems... and I think it's all settled down, except I do get tired and need a whole day in bed every week ... And yes this is a great place, coz no matter how good others are, they don't know how this journey effects us ...

Metformin, a drug commonly used to treat people with type 2 diabetes, might help curb nicotine withdrawal without side effects, according to a study of mice. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Pennsylvania found the inexpensive drug was effective in treating mice induced with a nicotine addiction. Their findings were published Thursday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. Metformin, marketed as Glucophage and other trade names, was discovered in 1918 After it was discontinued due to toxicity and the increased availability of insulin, the drug was found to be less potent than other glucose-lowering biguanides and was subsequently reintroduced in France in 1957 and the United States in 1995. Common therapies -- such as nicotine replacement, an antidepressant and a medication used to mediate the pleasurable feelings smokers associate with cigarettes -- already exist to help people kick their nicotine habits. But none directly treats nicotine withdrawal symptoms, according to Dr. Sangwon Kim, of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine's Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism.
