    Methotrexate and plaquenil for ra

Yesterday my rheumatologist started me on hydroxychloroquine as well. Is anyone else on this combination and have you had any problems with it as I know hydroxychloroquine can cause eye sight problems.

My rheumy has officially decided today this is seronegative RA, and its time to start DMARDS to protect my joints. He's giving me a few weeks to do my homework though so that we can choose a medication for this. Basically he wants me to get through the holidays without medication symptoms. He wants me to look at plaquenil and methotrexate. To find out if methotrexate is a good choice for helping you manage your RA, talk to your doctor about whether it’s the right treatment for you individually. If you’re prescribed methotrexate, be sure to take it exactly as the doctor prescribes in the correct doses for maximum treatment benefits with the lowest risk of side effects. Methotrexate is one of the most effective and commonly used medications in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and other forms of inflammatory arthritis, and also may be used to treat lupus, inflammatory myositis, vasculitis, and some forms of childhood arthritis. It is often used in combination with other medications to treat arthritis.

Recently my eyes have felt sore and, after posting a question on this site, I am seeing my GP on Monday. Thanks Hi Catjones I have been taking this combination, started on both of them in January this year.

  5. Methotrexate is a type of DMARD. DMARDs are a class of medications often used in the early stages of RA. A few drugs in the DMARD class were specifically made for treating RA, but methotrexate was.

Hydroxychloroquine brand namePlaquenil is a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD approved for adults with RA. It is often given in combination with methotrexate and sulfasalazine a treatment known as triple therapy, to help slow RA disease progression for patients who do not get relief from methotrexate therapy alone. 1,2 Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is primarily used in combination with other drugs, including methotrexate and/or sulfasalazine for moderate to severe Rheumatoid Arthritis. It is only prescribed alone in patients with very mild symptoms, who are RF negative and have non-erosive disease. I have had RA for 10 years and have been on Plaquenil pretty much the whole time. Methotrexate did not work for me and made me very nauseous. I also take 5-10 mg prednisone and an injection of Humira every week. I have had no side effects from the Plaquenil. Prednisone is a mean drug however, I can tell you this as a nurse too but I have to.

Plaquenil questions - Mar 16, 2009 I was just prescribed plaquenil to treat the cyst form of lyme. The usage of the drug says it is to suppress the immune system in the treatment of lupus. Why would you want to do this if you have lyme. I thought steriods and drugs that suppress the immune system make treatment much slower. I am reluctant to take it.
